Eight out of 10 people without access to clean water live in rural areas, and nearly half of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa. (UNICEF)

Support from local physicians was essential for our work, both medically and administratively. Ghana was selected for the first round of projects, in part because Nathan and Linda were connected to Dr. Sampson Antwi, and Dr. Daniel Ansong.

Prof Sampson Antwi is a renowned professor of child health and paediatric nephrology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. He also founded the pediatric renal clinic, the paediatric HIV clinic, and the malnutrition unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana.

Dr. Daniel Ansong is a Professor of Paediatrics and the Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana. He previously held the position of Deputy Director in charge of Research and Development of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). He is a Fellow of both the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS).

Possessing first-hand knowledge of the acute water crisis through their clinical work, they were also instrumental in identifying three villages in the region that were in great need.

A member of our board, Seth Johnson, RN, who is a Ghanaian, played a pivotal role by facilitating important relationships with local leaders and the major hospital in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra region.

Community Impact

At all project sites, having pure drinking water dramatically improved the villagers' quality of life. In all our return visits, mothers have come to tell us what a difference the pure water has made in their lives, particularly in reducing or eliminating illnesses such as diarrhea in their  children under the age of 5. Also, teachers, particularly in elementary school indicate that students are now rarely sent home from school due to diarrhea.
